Expand PRI - Northumberland County Archives Service - SANT/PRI - PRINTED BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS. - The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne was formed in 1813. From the earliest days publications on subjects of the society's interests was advocated by the early members. Publication has always been of importance to the society - two main journal series - Archaeologia Aeliana and the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne - based, like so much of the early society, on the older, national and London-based Society of Antiquaries. The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne has issued other publications. No references are given here for the sake of repeating of those articles highlighted of potential use.

Much of the early Society methods and procedures followed in practice the well-established Society of Antiquaries. The publication record started intermittently - an early success was the reprinting of William Gray's Chorographia argued to be the earliest English-language local history book. The first periodical volumes of Archaeologia Aeliana, often abbreviated to 'AA', were issued in parts - later to become an annual publication. Annual reports were, of course, issued and supplemented from 1855 by the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne that was issued in regular parts till 1956, before being replaced again by the Annual Reports. In both cases memoirs and obituaries have been carried of society members.

ARCHAEOLOGIA AELIANA
The main society publication has been issued in (currently) five series - broken into different numbers of contributing volumes. These are respectively the first - of four, the second of 25, the third of 21, fourth of 50 and fifth (currently) 32 volumes. B This has tended to concentrate upon lengthy reports of whatever sort. Extensive printing of primary source material and transcripts has been undertaken - though only occasionally. Book reviews have also been carried in this journal. Early articles tended to be unmodified letters to the early Secretaries of the society, John Adamson and John Hodgson, often accompanying donations. Though primarily regional in scope, like the society, Archaeologia Aeliana has carried larger discussions based initially on the northern examples of whatever subject.

Occasional volumes (such as 1913, 1940 and 2003 amongst others) have appeared given over in entirety to single topics. There are indexes to Archaeologia Aeliana; within the 1913 volume, a combined 1924 (second and third series), fourth series (1935, 1946, 1958 and unpublished - 2004) and fifth series (issued 1997) index. Archaeologia Aeliana, Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Annual Reports have carried annual reports of the society.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIES OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
The second main publication has been issued from 1855, annually from 1882, to 1956. This has also been divided into five series; the first one volume, the second series ten volumes, third ten volumes, fourth series eleven and fifth series one volume. These, however, were issued in numbered parts - though of no fixed length, appearing frequently throughout the year. As a more workmanlike journal the Proceedings… carry more of the Society's everyday affairs of donations, accounts, notices of meetings and lectures. Shorter articles, often read at society meetings, have also been carried. Since more regular the Proceedings… also carry more articles of fresh discoveries or in time for commemorative events.

There are some indexes to either the individual volumes of the compiled parts - though currently there is only a cumulative index for the whole volumes pre-1924.

OTHER PUBLICATIONS
The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne has issued a variety of publications separate from the two main journals on a more occasional basis - though many were initially produced as offprints. Museum catalogues, (not necessarily offprints), often theme-based, have been issued on an occasional basis - with transcripts of documents, such as Medieval documentation or parish registers. The Society has issued these often alone - but increasingly with a number of collaborative partners - including the Museum of Antiquities (of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne), or Castle Morpeth Borough Council (of the extensive bagpipe collections).

Freestanding publications of more substantial monographs and the record series - and latterly the Buildings of Newcastle series - have been produced on single topics or sites. Reprinting with the Buildings of Newcastle series and other Archaeologia Aeliana articles has taken place within publications by the society itself or in the reprinting of papers by the Late Professors J.C. Mann and H.S. Offler and Dr P. Hunter Blair amongst others. Such date from the mid-19th century onwards. Occasional news bulletins have also been issued in recent years covering recent events within the past few years.
