SANT
- MAP - Northumberland Archives - SANT/MAP - MAPS - Map: 'A representation of the earth's surface or a part of it, its physical and political features, etc., or of the heavens, delineated on a flat surface of paper according to a definite scale or projection.' Plan: '1. A large scale detailed map of a town or district. 2. A drawing showing the relative positions of the parts of a building or any one floor on a horizontal plane.' Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, 1954 edition. The above definitions have been when cataloguing the map and plan collection, however if the author of a document described it as a map it has been catalogued as a map even if by the above definitions it should be a plan. Similarly if the author described a document as a plan it has been catalogued as a plan since the use of the two words has varied over centuries.
