Description | The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne was founded in 1813. The history of the society and its collections has been given elsewhere in varying amounts of detail (see separate files). The following materials outline the history of the various committees that have been, and in some cases continue, to undertake portions of the society's varied activities and attentions. Publication references are given for these committees where applicable - though in some little can be stated without recourse to further research.
The history of The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne is not traced here - suffice to say the first volumes of correspondence (SANT/ADMIN/1 and SANT/ADMIN/2) carry much of the general details of the first offices and the general council arrangements. Jobey, in a general survey of the membership from 1813, notes the varying attendance of members in the early meetings, and the need for the changing of the statutes where numbers were specified (1990: 199-201). The officers of patrons, presidents, vice-presidents, librarian, secretaries and treasurer, with council are enshrined within statutes - holders of some of the offices are recorded by Crawford Hodgson (1913). Over almost 200 years there have been various committees formed associated with a variety of ventures - it is these specialist committees that are presented.
