Description | Digital copies of postcards views of Stannington Sanatorium, Stannington, Northumberland, Cards were borrowed from Miss Doris Kerr who was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1923 and was a patient at Stannington Sanatorium in 1926. She recalled resting in the Vita Glass pavilion and sitting on a small stool, wearing goggles to protect her eyes and with her chest bare, whilst a strong light was shone on her face and body. Her father was a patient at Woolley Sanatorium and she believed her mother bought the postcards of Stannington to show him where Doris was being treated, as he was unable to visit her himself and was very unhappy about his only child having to stay in a sanatorium. She made a complete recovery but her father continued to suffer from his condition and when he returned to the family home in Norham, had to sleep in a specially constructed shed in the garden. DEPOSITED AS PART OF THE "VOICES OF STANNINGTON SANATORIUM" PROJECT. |
