"Former Oxford Blue [Inscribed oar found in cellar of old vicarage] Coach to Ashington Rowing Club 1938. Married in his 80s, owned property in Morven Terrace area and regularly put poor families into these without a hope of any return. Visited every family in his parish as often as possible. Ashington Rowing Club were Winners of the Mayors Plate at Durham Regatta - Crew Stroke, Arthur Mews; 2, Bob Riches; 3, Jack Abercrombie; Bow, Stan Wingate; Cox, Jim Slaughter; Coach, R.V. Sam Davison". |
